A Speakeasy-Style Basement Upgrade That Turned 'Should We Move?' Into 'Why Would We?'

With rising housing costs deterring their plans to move, a Verona family chose to rethink rather than relocate. Their finished basement had long been a hub for kids’ hangouts and game nights, but with their daughters getting older and using the space less, the homeowners saw an opportunity to reclaim it for themselves. What they envisioned was something grown-up and modern: a moody, sophisticated entertaining area that could serve as a retreat for relaxing with friends and family.

The Vision

Before starting, we collaborated closely with the homeowners to gather inspiration, sharing images and ideas until a clear vision emerged. The goal was to strike the perfect balance between modern polish and cozy comfort, creating a lower level that feels more like a sophisticated boutique speakeasy than a traditional basement bar.

This design board reflects the curated imagery, color swatches, furnishing suggestions, lighting selections, and material inspiration that guided this swanky redesign.

The Bar Area Glow-Up

The transformation began at the wet bar. Out went the traditional linear glass mosaic backsplash, and in came a dramatic black and gold mid-century-inspired tile, which we installed all the way to the ceiling to maximize impact. The homeowners upgraded their cabinet hardware, swapped in modern gold pendant lighting, and added a set of new barstools with clean lines and luxe details to elevate and freshen the space.

This lower-level bar area took on an entirely new vibe with a new backsplash and updated finishes.

The Swanky Dining Nook

Just around the corner, we turned a once-disconnected dining nook into a stylish anchor point. A freestanding wood pub table and stools were replaced with a custom-built L-shaped bench featuring smoked gray wood slat inlays, trimmed in Iron Ore. A 4-inch cushion upholstered in a neutral textured performance fabric is tough enough to handle wine spills and comfortable enough for lounging. We helped them choose a mix of throw pillows to add depth and cohesion, drawing on the surrounding color palette of rich blacks, camel tones, and warm metallics.

Smoked gray wood slats give the custom L-shaped bench a sleek, modern texture.

A modern oval dining table with a sculptural starburst base and boomerang legs adds mid-century influence with a contemporary edge. Two black oak veneer dining chairs provide additional seating with a minimalist silhouette that doesn’t compete with the bench. Overhead, a sleek gold dome pendant casts a warm glow and ties the entire area together.

A custom cushion, curated pillows, and modern furnishings bring this dining nook to life.

The Grand Uncorking

Now, the hub of this lower level is fully reimagined. Rich textures, warm lighting, and bold design choices bring the speakeasy style to life—moody, welcoming, and full of personality. Whether entertaining guests or winding down with a glass of wine, these homeowners have a new favorite place to be...without ever leaving home.

This updated basement entertaining area blends comfort and sophistication.
