From Builder Grade to Beautiful: A Cozy Fireplace Transformation

A Madison homeowner wanted to transform his condo's builder-grade fireplace wall into a warm, welcoming showpiece for displaying his treasured artwork and personal accessories. After discussing his wishlist of ideas, we quickly got to work conceptualizing a plan that would tick every box.

The Design Concept

The homeowner envisioned a fireplace mantel to showcase artwork and seasonal and personal treasures. To achieve this, we designed it extra-deep at 10 inches, providing ample space for display. While initially considering maple, he ultimately chose oak for its striking wood grain, stained in a rich, dark tone to complement the other wood furniture in his condo and add a grounded aesthetic.

For the fireplace surround, we selected a neutral yet warm travertine ledger stone in cream, gray, beige, and copper tones. This stone matched beautifully with the adjacent white kitchen cabinetry and wall paint. To add another layer of texture and warmth, we incorporated oatmeal-hued 12x24 ceramic tile in the center of the fireplace.

Lighting was also an essential element in this redesign. We recommended a picture light above the mantel and two sconces flanking his featured art piece to highlight the homeowner's artwork and personal treasures.

To help visualize the finished look, we provided a digital design mockup and material samples. This approach allowed the homeowner to see how each component would come together before construction began.

The Remodeling Process

Our work began with carefully demolishing the existing mantel and tile. Once the space was prepped, we handcrafted and installed the oak mantel, staining it in a dark coffee hue that accentuated its beautiful grain and texture. With the mantel in place, we installed the warm stacked stone from floor to ceiling, positioning the neutral tile vertically in the center to create a balanced and cohesive look.

In just a few days, we transformed this basic fireplace into a stunning focal point that feels both cozy and sophisticated. The final result perfectly blends the homeowner’s love of natural wood with the refined warmth of stone and tile.
